League One Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds has been linked with a £300million move to take over another football club.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham when the club was in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. Since then, they have led Wrexham to back-to-back promotions, reaching League One. The team is now competing for a spot in the Championship, battling against Stockport County, Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers, and Huddersfield Town, among others.

However, The Mirror reports that Reynolds could be part of a consortium eyeing a takeover of MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, his hometown club. This wouldn’t be the duo’s only venture outside of Wrexham—they are also part of a group that owns Mexican club Necaxa.

There are existing ties between Reynolds and Vancouver Whitecaps, as the MLS side played Wrexham in a pre-season match last year. However, this potential deal would be far more substantial than the estimated £2 million purchase of Wrexham and would likely require significant external investment.

At this stage, no formal offer has been made, and it’s possible the current owners are using the speculation to generate interest in the sale. That said, Reynolds has a history of exploring investment opportunities, and with personal ties to the club, it could be an appealing prospect. However, with his net worth estimated at £300-350 million, this would be a much larger financial commitment.

With any deal of this size it will take a significantly long time to process paperwork, get deals resolved and have discussions over plans. With Reynolds unable to purchase in straight cash, he will have to rely on his consortium which will also lengthen the process as box ticking takes place amongst all the interested parties.

On the face of it, nothing. Wrexham appears to be the pair’s diamond in the crown and with the opportunity to get them to the Premier League becoming a more realistic proposition it is unlikely that they are willing to turn their attention elsewhere anytime soon.

However, there are some financial implications. The Whitecaps will take a significant amount of Reynold’s finances and with the costs of pushing Wrexham only getting higher as they push up the football pyramid this could impact them later down the line. But it is safe to say, until Wrexham are in the Premier League, they are here to stay.
