Wrexham Co-Owner Ryan Reynolds Linked to £300M MLS Takeover as Red Dragons’ Rise Continues

Posted: 2025-2-9

Wrexham has undergone a complete transformation since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over from the Supporters Trust.

Four years have passed since the duo became owners of the Red Dragons.

The North American duo have managed to end Wrexham’s 15-year spell in the National League and secured back-to-back promotions.

A League One promotion charge is still ongoing, with the Hollywood-owned club sitting four points off the automatic spots prior to the weekend’s action getting underway.

As well as dominating on the field, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has been a huge success for the actors and has seen the club gain a huge international audience.

With Wrexham now so popular, Rob and Ryan have already begun looking at other investments.

Ryan Reynolds could invest in MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps

Back in April 2024, McElhenney and Reynolds invested in Club Necaxa before throwing their money at another team earlier this year.

It emerged in January that the Wrexham owners have invested in La Equidad in a deal worth $30m (around £24.5m).

Eva Longoria, Kate Upton and MLB pitcher Justin Verlander are all also thought to be involved in that deal.

Now, a report emerging from the Mirror suggests Reynolds could well take over a new club following Wrexham’s success.

It’s claimed MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, the team of the actor’s hometown, are willing to listen to offers to purchase the club.

And speculation is now growing that Reynolds could be interested with a £300m fee floated.

Ryan Reynolds stance on owning Wrexham

With two more clubs already invested in, fans may grow concerned that their current owner’s interest could fade.

However, how Reynolds feels about owning Wrexham was revealed in late January and it doesn’t appear his love for the team has dwindled in any way.

A source said at the time: “Ryan’s work in the Deadpool movies has generated billions of dollars in ticket sales and it’s kept him firmly on the Hollywood A-list, but the Wrexham project has been a lot closer to his heart and the partnership with Rob McElhenney continues to bear real fruit.

“It’s apples and oranges to compare these two franchises. [Wrexham] captured Ryan’s heart and that strong connection he has to the place is now allowing him to expand his businesses into new territories and capture entire new fan bases in the process.

“Even though Ryan has already sold a minority stake in the team, he and Rob are going to maintain control of the club and keep making the unscripted series as long as they can.”
